2025 Update
This site was recreated using the Way Back Machine in January 2025. The
site is nearly identical to the original, except email addresses have been redacted, URLs (mostly broken regardless) have been updated to HTTPS, Fixed Orbit URLs
converted to peerwith.me URLS, and date formatting has been changed from DD/MM/YY to YYYY-MM-DD so as to highlight that this a historical, non-current website.
Otherwise, it's pretty much the way it was 20 plus years ago. The website may receive an additional update to convert HTML style elements to the stylesheet to
support current standards/browsers.
The exchange was born out of a need in Vancouver to not haul local traffic to Seattle and back. At the time, BC.net existed but was pretty closed in terms of
participation with only education and government agencies able to connect and Peer1 had a decent offering, but it was not colo-neutral; had to be a Peer1 client to
connect. BChosting.com took it upon itself to start the VAIX, and since it already operated a colo facility in Harbour Centre and had a rack in the 6B MMR as well, there were not a lot
of blockers to get it operational. While the exchange only ever had a modest number of participants, it was still most of Vancouver's BGP-speaking networks at the time, minus Telus, Shaw
and a handful of others that couldn't reach the exchange from their current location outside of Harbour Centre.
The name VAIX was a shout out to the PAIX and
Paul Vixie.
A rebirth of the VAIX is being considered as of January 2025
Introduction to the VAIX
The VAncouver Internet eXchange, VAIX, was formed in November 2003 as an alternative to BC.net.
There is no cost to join the VAIX at this time. Setup fees, such as cross-connects, are the responsibilty of the
connecting participant. The VAIX is currently located at Harbour Centre in
the 6B Meet-Me-Room (MMR)
There are no requirements of participants, other than they follow the rules of the exchange. There are no
peering requirements, although peering with other members is encouraged and is basically the point of connecting to the exchange.
Information on other exchange points can be found here.
